This is a velvet collage made of 17 separate pieces. In a velvet workshop with Barbara Setsu Pickett we made a warp about 5 inches wide: 4 inches of velvet plus small borders. Everyone took home their samples, but I took home the loom and unused warp threads. That meant a 5” black cotton warp with a 4” second “velvet” warp of hundreds of sewing threads.
We talk of velvet being a pile fabric, meaning there are threads projecting from the ground or foundation fabric. To learn more, see my previous post. HERE
I spent a happy time weaving many variations as I could think of which you can see in the whole piece (which I mounted on black felt). The velvet loops can be cut or uncut. So I did both to make the little compositions. Voided velvet is another term which means that there are areas where there is no pile.
I kept making small compositions as I went along and then cut them apart and rearranged them for the final piece. I even used the scraps from the headers!
I’ve always loved this piece so I hope the judge likes it too. The topic is collage so it isn’t what I’d call a “regular” collage.

This is one of them. I did the shibori and decided to mount it on a fabric from Japan. I think it should pass muster as a collage—we’ll see.
