I am wondering why my box of locks of hair (all labeled on scraps of newspaper) was saved and by whom. They seem to be relatives of my dad. I wonder why they were collected in the first place. In an earlier post I mentioned that one of the newspapers was dated 1872 and that there might be around 40 little packages in the box. Any thoughts? More pictures are on my previous blogs.
People often saved locks of hair from deceased relatives, and also from their own brushes. If you look up Victorian hair jewelry or mourning jewelry you may find more information. What an interesting family find!
Thanks for this information–I had heard of the jewelry but didn’t realize it had the mourning element. I did Google Victorian hair jewelry–much information is there. You were my personal “Google” thanks for the lead.

Kind of creepy, but could they be locks from the newly dead (think Victorian hair mourning broaches) and the scraps of newspaper to indicate the date?
I did Google Victorian mourning hair jewelry–you are right about that. I’ll look at some of the newspapers today–wouldn’t that be an interesting twist that dates are on them all? thanks for the lead. I had no idea about this.
